A range extender receives the existing Wi-Fi signal and rebroadcasts it to stretch coverage. This can be useful when the router signal is still decent near the extender and the target area is nearby. When an extender is enough

A range extender can be a sensible first step when the issue is narrow: a single bedroom, a hallway, a smart plug near a door, or a low-bandwidth device. It is also reasonable for renters who cannot rewire and do not want a full system.

Place the extender where it still receives a strong signal from the router, usually halfway between the router and the weak area, not at the far edge of coverage. Test after placement. If speed, stability, or roaming still disappoint, return it and consider mesh or wired access points.

Placement matters more than marketing claims

A powerful router in the wrong place can perform worse than modest hardware in a good location. Keep access points elevated and open. Avoid hiding them behind metal, mirrors, thick furniture, appliances, or aquariums. If possible, use Ethernet backhaul for mesh nodes because wired links reduce wireless congestion.

Security and maintenance should not be skipped
